BP4Kids School Screening Initiative

"Because Every Child's Health is Important"

The BP4KIDS School Screening Initiative is a model program which provides baseline blood pressure readings for school aged children.  Presently, the NPBPAF is working with elementary and middle schools to implement and conduct screenings with the guidance of school nurses and school principals. The NPBPAF provides the necessary permission forms and information for parents prior to screening dates. As each child is screened, they will be given a form to take home with the results and recommended action.

Blood pressure screenings at school are conducted in the same manner as traditional hearing and vision screenings.  This is a vital measure that school districts must take to ensure the safety and health of their students.  If a child is suffering with undiagnosed hypertension, they are at much greater risk for suffering strokes, heart attacks, dizziness, and headaches, among other conditions.  These are very real consequences for children.  This can pose a serious risk to children while at school.  If a child can be properly diagnosed and treated by a medical professional, this can greatly improve their performance at school.

Often times, school nurses are overloaded with day to day duties to keep their students healthy.  We understand the lack of time and resources in many instances.  We seek information and resources from those that may be able to offer assistance on this important issue.  Our hope is to bridge a gap between the under-screened population of children and school systems by working together to coordinate annual screens in an effective and efficient manner.

This effort would not be possible without the help and support of our business leaders and community.  If it were your child, grandchild, niece, nephew, or friend, wouldn't you want to know?
